Eight Student Teams Honored as ExploraVision National Winners

Toshiba and NSTA have declared eight student teams national winners of the 33rd annual Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision competition, the world’s largest K–12 science competition. This year’s winners created innovative proposals for overcoming some of the world’s greatest challenges, from healthcare issues (heart-attack prevention with the Nano Artertract Plaque Seeker) to transportation efforts (improved road surfaces that prevent crashes with Biomimetic Surfaces) to protecting the environment (fighting wildfires with Drone Ranger). "Our future is in good hands with these future scientists and innovators at the helm,” observed NSTA President Alicia Conerly, Ed.D.

Two important sources of these standards are the National Fire Protection Association and the American National Standards Institute/American Society of Safety Professionals. Created for middle level science classes, the Building Insights through Observation (BIO) model uses hands-on, arts-based instructional approaches with science content (specifically geospatial data visualizations) to lead students in sensemaking about global phenomena.
