FAA Clears Boeing 737 MAX 7 to Fly

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has certified the Boeing 737 MAX 7, the smallest model in the family of aircraft, after nearly a decade of delays for safety reviews. The agency on Monday said the approval “reflects years of sustained work to resolve complex technical issues and complete a thorough review of the airplane’s design and supporting safety analyses.”

Qantas Airways confirmed Jetstar Japan will buy back its 33.32 per cent stake in the budget carrier in an 8.2 billion yen (S$66 million) deal, paving the way for it to come under Japanese ownership and re-brand under a new name. The Development Bank of Japan will join as a new shareholder, while Japan Airlines and Tokyo Century will retain their respective stakes.

Qantas has refused to confirm whether it will ship up to 1,000 jobs offshore to India as part of a restructuring program centred around AI. According to the Australian Financial Review, the deal reached alongside Accenture and known as Project iQ, would see marketing, finance, human resources and other back-office positions outsourced to other countries, including India.

WestJet Strike Ends after Tentative Agreement Reached with Cabin Crew Union

WestJet and the union representing cabin crew staff have reached a tentative agreement bringing the current strike action to an end. On August 3, WestJet said the deal reached brings to a close the work stoppage and network-wide operational disruption that has led to hundreds of flight cancellations. The agreement will now go to WestJet cabin crew union members for a ratification vote.

Somon Air has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737-8, becoming the first airline in Tajikistan to operate the 737 MAX as it advances its fleet modernization and network expansion plans.
